Cold? Warm-Up By Learning More About Bixby Summer Day Camp

Geo Fieldtrip 2012 (23)Did you know that it’s about that time to think about summer? What?!?!?! You may be thinking, but the first snow just fell. Ok, you’re right. Let’s be present with winter for a moment.   Inevitably, however, you may feel your mind contemplating the warmth of summer through these early winter months. I have an idea: Picture yourself soaking in the summer sun at Chautauqua while your children are having the best week of their lives at the Bixby Summer Day Camp!

Allow me to introduce myself. I am Garrett Braun, the new Bixby Summer Day Camp Coordinator.  Many of you have known me in this role already. I led the summer camp here at Bixby for two years (2013 and 2014). I am elated to be back, and so excited about some new aspects of our camp that I want to share them with you here.

First of all, as in the past, we will be having weekly themes. What’s new this year is that expert guests will join us for each week. Some of the themes we already have set are:

  • African Drum and Dance
  • Circus Arts – juggling/silks
  • Parkour @Bixby
  • Magic Potions/Herbs
  • Primitive Skills
  • Natural Building
  • 3D Printing
  • Theater
  • Wearable Art

In addition, because registration this year will be on a weekly basis, every student will get to participate in the special theme activities. There will no longer be an extra cost or a limit to the number of students able to attend these special theme activities. You will be able to register for all these exciting weeks online!

I strongly believe in providing multi-age learning opportunities as a key aspect of emotional and intellectual development. For that reason, I am very excited to announce a new mentorship program during the summer camp. I will invite Bixby alumni to come back to volunteer as Student Teacher mentors for the rising 6th grade student teachers. Inviting Middle and High School students into the program will enrich your children’s experience and make Bixby one-of-a-kind. I hope the Bixby Alumni can help extend the current Bixby students’ views of what Bixby has been, is, and can be. Nowhere else in Boulder can you find a camp that offers so much time to play, explore, and discover while creating deep relationships with a variety of ages.

In Joy,

Garrett
