Inside Kindergarten With Lisa

P1170101Looking back on the first two weeks of kindergarten, I witnessed the amazing impact that the outdoors had on our young learners. They were so excited and eager to investigate nature. I was surprised and inspired to learn alongside my kindergartners. They had no need for typical teaching materials. Sticks, berries, leaves and other natural treasures became props for learning.

Nifer showed the Kindergarteners the amazing gardens of Bixby. The children utilized their senses, while exploring the outdoors, by touching, smelling, and finally guessing what plants were presented to them. Finally, they had a chance to taste the fresh herbs.

We are so fortunate to have beautifully warm weather and we are going to take full advantage of it during our unit study of Water. So far, we have conducted a sink/float experiment, designed boats from foil and clay, and investigated watercolor mixing.

I am looking forward to walking with this young group of learners to Bridgewalk Pond on Monday mornings. I want the children to become more observant, curious, and aware of their surroundings. I want kindergarteners to be excited about science by exposing them to the outdoors and the beauty of nature!
