Philosophy

School co-founder Pat Baker, succinctly summarized Bixby School’s philosophy as grounded in the belief that “it is important that children learn about themselves at least as much as they learn about academics.” Bixby’s philosophy emphasizes student-centered approaches to teaching and learning, placing equal emphasis upon personal development as academic knowledge and skills.

The School’s philosophy of education is heavily inspired by the theories of John Dewey, one of American pragmatism’s early founders, and one of the most prominent American intellectuals for the first half of the twentieth century. While not a specific program of teaching and learning, Dewey’s philosophies about children, the purpose of education and the most effective means of pursuing that purpose have influenced a variety of school models in practice today.  While distinct in their structure and methods, schools that share a commitment to theories espoused by Dewey and later inspired by them are referred to within the education community as “progressive education.”

Finding Joy
Our programming focuses on the individual child's needs, interests, and abilities. It recognizes that each child learns differently and at their own pace. This personalized approach helps create a supportive and engaging learning environment where children feel valued and understood. Bixby students discover their individual creativity together and let it out to shine.
Exploring the Unknown
Bixby programming provides multiple opportunities for hands-on applied learning. Children are encouraged to explore and interact with their environment and stay curious. This active engagement promotes a deeper understanding of concepts and enhances retention. Bixby students explore, interact with their environment, and follow their curiosity and sense of wonder.
Connections and Self-Awareness
At Bixby, we practice collaboration, communication, and empathy-building opportunities because who we are and how we feel are just as important as what we know.
Creativity and Innovation
Bixby students express themselves creatively and explore diverse perspectives, preparing them to tackle challenges that may not even exist.
Leading Learning
Bixby students own their learning, choosing how and what they learn. They discover meaning through play, challenge, and independence and value the opinions and ideas of others.
Lifelong Learning
When students leave Bixby, they are ready to take on whatever comes next; they are compassionate people who advocate for themselves, are bold enough to ask challenging questions, and are lifelong learners.

Aligned with our mission to “nurture children’s love of learning as they discover their individual gifts and prepare to make meaningful contributions to their world.”

We recognize the importance of seeing the whole child—academically, socially, emotionally, and creatively. It prepares our students not only for academic success but also for personal fulfillment and active participation in an ever-changing world.
