Did you know that…
…the Maya Civilization lived from c.a. 2000 B.C. to A.D. 1500 while the Ancient Egyptians ruled from c.a. 5500 B.C. to 500 B.C?
… the Mayan pyramids had steps for the high priests to perform ceremonies on top of them while similar Egyptian structures were used as burial chambers?
… the writing of characters in both civilizations are called hieroglyphics?
The First Grade students are going on a trip to the past of Mesoamerica in Spanish class. We are learning about the Olmecs and the Ancient Mayas.
This study forms part of the Ancient Civilization Unit, as I am sure you have been reading in other subject blogs.
In Spanish, the kids started by learning about the meaning of a timeline and then worked on their own timeline. We then talked about the giant Olmec heads found in the southeast of Mexico.
At the present, we are learning about Maya’s culture, where they lived, how they lived, and what they left to humanity, and we are speculating how they disappear. To close the unit they will make their own Maya Pyramids out of Legos, and compare them with the Egyptian structures they already prepared.
Beside this, the First Graders are learning the names of family members in Spanish. I will ask you to help them with special homework: to prepare a Family Tree. Look in your Friday Folder for a package with instructions.
Gracias y qué tengan un buen día.
