Why is Unstructured Play Crucial?

Several weeks ago, Julie Layne (1-3rd grade math) shared an online article with me about the value of play, and in particular unstructured play.  The article, “Why is Unstructured Play Crucial” effectively describes what is play, why it matters and what it looks like – joyful, mathematical, physical, social, creative and more.  This is what we strive to foster every day at Bixby in preschool all the way through 5th grade. The thing about play is that it looks “messy” and sometimes it can be hard to explain the purpose and power of it all.  I invite you to read this article and hear what resonates with you? I also invite you to remember to play as an adult – with your kids or with others..it’s a lifelong skill and truly a human need.
